In 2012, Gigajoule launched the first study to determine the feasibility of a LNG import terminal in the Matola harbour and a 2 000MW power station in the region. This study confirmed the feasibility, and Gigajoule went ahead to apply for concessions to further develop these projects. The concessions were awarded in 2019. At the time, Gigajoule also signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with TotalEnergies to further develop this project.
The LNG Project entails the development, design, construction, financing, and operation of new marine facilities to moor and supply LNG to an FSRU in the Matola harbour. LNG will be regasified aboard the FSRU. A new 20km gas transmission pipeline system will transport the natural gas from the FSRU to the Beluluane Industrial Park area in Matola and onwards into the MGC gas pipeline system. The MGC pipeline network is connected to the Rompco pipeline network, which supplies gas to the South African gas market.
The FSRU will berth at new purposefully designed and built mooring facilities in the Matola harbour. The LNG will be stored at -160°c and near atmospheric pressure in the cryogenic tanks of the FSRU. Delivery of LNG to the FSRU will be via LNG carriers of size ranging between 135,000 and 185,000 m3, sourced from the international LNG market. The LNG ship will moor alongside the FSRU and transfer LNG cargoes into the storage tanks of the FSRU. Onboard re-gas trains will regasify the liquid LNG and deliver high pressure natural gas to the onshore pipeline system.
The network will connect the port of Matola with:
CTB, the new 2 000MW gas power plant to being developed in the Beluluane Industrial Park, 20km from the FSRU
the MGC gas distribution network to supply other gas offtakers in the Maputo province
the high-pressure transmission pipeline of MGC in Matola, which transports natural gas to the Rompco pipeline system and into South Africa for use by existing gas users, new potential industries and gas to power offtakers. The existing 70km MGC transmission pipeline will be looped with a new 28 inch pipeline to supply gas from the BGC pipeline to the Rompco pipeline.
